3,459 Michael Jackson .COM Domains Registered Summary Where do you draw the line between registering a domain name to mourn or honor an individual, vs profit from their death? Since MJ died, there have been 3,459 .com domain names registered with the word “michael” in them. Don’t believe me? Well, here is the list I compiled (please give me credit if you use [...] ICANN Spins Appointment of New CEO – Rod Beckstrom Summary As we suspected, ICANN has hired Rod Beckstrom as its new CEO. If you look at the House of Reps grilling of ICANN, there was an underlying theme of “security”, so this appointment doesn’t exactly come as a shock. Beckstrom spent less than 12 months in the Department of Homeland Security, where he was the Director of [...] Former Packer Slapped With Suit Over Unethical Website Summary Its been reported that Former Green Bay Packers lineman, Tony Mandarich, allegedly posted up a website under his ex-fiancée’s name. When [...] GetARoom.com sells for $30,000 USD (and others) Summary The Sedo sales for the week of June 22nd are highlighted by the sale of a slogan domain for $30,000 USD: GetARoom.com. While the name just redirects to RoomValues.com, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see it used more prominently in the future. Sedo also sold two .co.uk Domains (HorseRacing.co.uk and OnlineCasino.co.uk) at 100,000 British [...] AfternicDLS sells domains for $496,780.78 Summary In the week up to June 22nd, 2009, AfternicDLS sold 334 domains for a total of $496,780.78 USD with an average price of $1,487.37 per domain. Summary Don’t let anyone tells you differently, times are challenging, the strong will survive, and many shall perish. To give you an idea what one to do these days to create a better future, the scope of urgency, action, here are few things I’m working on these days: 1. New bido release, multiple auctions & more First and formost on my list, we’ve been hard @ work on a new upcoming bido release. This release will bring multiple auctions per day to the bido community. Also, Bido experts will be soon voting on all submitted domains, upcoming auctions. We want to be as much hands-off as possible and shift the focus to the community to make these important decisions. Transparency is good business.
And I’m sure am forgetting a couple of other things I’m busy @ work. There’s much to do, so little time. Have a great day. Sahar (comments are blocked as I’m on a blog break, if you wish to reply, on my Twitter page please) A Public Note To Francois @ Domaining.com Summary UPDATE:————————— ————- eMail from Francois now, reversing this action. Dear feed member,I consider this a small win to all. Thanks for participating and voicing your opinion about this important matter. If we do not take care of fairness within our industry, no one else will. ————————————— ————————– Francois never understood why I never sent a reply privately. It is simple: The email was not addressed to me privately, nor personally. As it turned out, Francois sent the same exact email to others. Since then, as this issue is now in the public eye (as it should be), all communication is now public. What is anti competitive behavior means? Via Wikipedia: Anti-competitive practices are business or government practices that prevent and/or reduce competition in a market While I do not see eye to eye with Francois on many levels for a long time, this one was the one I felt I had to draw the line. There’s a big difference between what was done previously to this last event. While I did not like some of the ideas Francois implemented in the past, I admire his willingness to try new things, find what works, adapt. With that said, that last event was none of it. That last event basically told bloggers that in order to be included in syndication (site or newsletter, it is the same principle), a blogger must remove competitors from their site. While I’m not an attorney I’m quite sure this is illegal in many countries. But more than that for me, it is highly unethical business practice. Many have said that Domaining.com is a good source of traffic therefore they will make the decision based on that. I highly disagree. I believe at times we all call our higher set of values, those that tell us what is right and what is wrong. This is plain wrong. The only acceptable conclusion here is a sincere apology and reversal of this action by Francois. Anything else is selling ourselves short. As I’m still on a blog break comments here are blocked. You may reply on the issue at the links below or on my Twitter page. Further readings: Domaining.com and anti-competitiveness, Too Many Secrets blog On the subject at LLLL.COM (see WIRE’s commentary) Bye Bye Domaining.com Summary Got an email earlier from Francois of Domaining.com: Hello,I did not plan to post for a while on the blog as I’m on a blog break. I wouldn’t really mine if my blog was dropped due to inactivity, but due to anti competitiveness? I feel this is just plain wrong. I believe Francois & Domaining.com have done much to further the domain industry. With that said, I can no longer align myself with such a venue, and such beliefs. I believe the best should win, not because of blocking competitors, but because of best service. To those who wonder who that other service is (domain aggregator), I believe he is refering to NameBee. As I’m on a blog break comments here are blocked. Just to be clear, this isn’t a paid post nor a request by anyone, it is based on the many years of experience with many within the company, from monetization services to registrations, and more. Choosing a brand name such as “Fabulous.com” is a risky proposition. If we take the long term view, there’s always going to be ups and downs. Is it possible to be fabulous all the time? Having such a brand name, if things go wrong, what would people say? In my view, taking on such a name simplifies everything for a company, as the identity could have not been any clearer to anyone in the company, its customers, and potential customers. Now being able to deliver on such a promise, that’s a whole different story. The folks at Fabulous.com have been able to do so time and again. While the company had its fair share of ups and downs, one thing has always been there: Fabulous service. The Fabulous folks come to most if not all industry trade shows. If you drop a line to Support, response usually is within a couple of hours or less. If you have a special request, as long as it is reasonable, they always accommodate. And how about Fabulous excellence? Fabulous yesterday issued a bonus/compensation to all its affected parking clients because of their Google (their upstream provider) downtime (did you even know about that?). It was news to me however since we have names there, it is always a surprise to get those emails where “money was added to account due to downtime issues”. Feel free to share your “Fabulous” experience! Outsourcing Domain Development Revisited Summary Although I do most of my site development myself, using XSitePro2 or Dreamweaver, there are times when it's necessary to outsource. Today I have awarded a $2000 contract to develop one of my sites to an established firm overseas. I'll show the site when it's done. I expect it to take 35 days. We'll see. In the past, I've had mixed experiences with this approach. One developer (php/MySql) I used originally, probably 5 years ago now, is still in contact and I use him for scripts and site add-ons. I'd use him more, but he is building some properties at the moment and because he works alone, he doesn't have the capacity he once had. Brilliant guy though - I found him on Elance.com originally. Other projects I've tried haven't worked out so well, whilst some have been a disaster. I can't think of many that have been outstanding successes. Part of the problem has been that I've picked individuals rather than teams to do the work. When people work alone, they over-commit and when they come across something they can't do, they quickly run out of alternative answers. Looking at my own mistakes, I'd say that I have been to blame for 50% of the failures, either through insufficient specifications at the start, or because of my high expectations. My approach has changed now. Here's what I do on the various freelance sites when trying to get a project started: 1) I feature the job. It then stands out from all the wannabe's. 2) I declare a budget and I make it as high as I can in order to attract serious developers. 3) The initial job specification is broad and comprehensive enough to let developers get an understanding of the overall requirement. 4) Only teams are invited to bid. I now search through profiles and old projects on the various freelance sites in order to get an understanding of the freelancer's capabilities. 5) I keep the bids private. (it helps avoid shill bids from multiple account holders) 6) All of the freelance sites have private message boards for each project - I use them extensively at the bid stage by asking lots of questions. 7) A list of previous projects and URL's is no longer satisfactory to me. I ask for email and phone contact information for previous clients and then check this against whois info for the domains in question - just to be sure. 8) I then ask the previous clients a lot of questions about their dealings with the freelancers involved in the project. Some are happy to respond. Others don't - that's just life. 9) Before awarding a project, I throw in a few more questions to the developer, like, "What's the project you're most proud of - and why"? "If you fall sick during a project, what happens"? "What happens if your lead developer resigns tomorrow"? 10) When I award the project, I deposit 100% of the project funds into escrow so that my developer knows that the money is safe. I don't know if I have it right yet, but I'll continue to work on it. As it happens, I think I have found a good team for my latest on-line adventure. Time will tell.David-Carter.com is a free Internet Marketing site. Personality Profile - what's that got to do with domains? Summary When I first bought the name personalityprofile.co.uk, it was because I had qualified to conduct personality profiling. I thought at the time that it would be useful in my recruitment business, but as it transpires, I lost interest in the subject entirely. It was only when I was browsing through my portfolio this morning, looking for another recruitment oriented name to develop, that I discovered it has been parked for a couple of years. I'd completely forgotten about it, even though some time ago, I'd had somebody make me a header for a site I was planning. Well, time's gone by, so although I posted a site at http://www.personalityprofile.co.uk a few minutes ago, I've decided to try and sell it. If personality profiling is your thing, maybe it will be of interest to you.
